Fireworks, Flight, and a Bit of Faith

On Saturday, November 1st, 2025, Drone Devotion had the privilege of filming the fireworks night at the Royal Gunpowder Mills in Waltham Abbey. It’s a historic spot with a fitting theme—explosives and aerials, past and present.

I, Vincent Ball, was on the controls as Remote Pilot, with Martyn Vale as spotter. The forecast looked grim, but after a quiet prayer and a bit of patience, we found a pocket of clear sky just in time for the show. It’s becoming a bit of a tradition now—dodging the rain by the skin of our teeth and catching that perfect weather window. We’ll take divine timing over Doppler radar any day.

The Mini 5 Pro performed beautifully, capturing the bursts, the crowd, and the glow over the old mill buildings. We’d planned the flight path carefully, coordinated with the event team, and kept safety front and centre throughout. It was a tight window, but we made it count—safe, smooth, and cinematic.

Thanks to the team at the Gunpowder Mills for having us. Another successful mission, and another reminder that sometimes, timing is everything. Looking forward to the next one.

On Sunday 14th September, Drone Devotion took to the skies over Grange Farm in Chigwell to support a heartfelt community event: a charity football match between ACE Activities and the Colebrook Legends. The day brought together players, families, and supporters to raise funds for ACE’s incredible work promoting inclusive sports and wellbeing.

Though the rain began around 4pm, the atmosphere remained electric. Laughter echoed across the pitch, and the spirit of the game shone through every pass, cheer, and muddy tackle. It was a day of connection, purpose, and shared joy.

My role as founder of Drone Devotion was to capture aerial footage using the Mavic 4 Pro—not just for documentation, but as reference for a painting I’ll be creating and auctioning next year in support of ACE. The final piece will be a framed A2 acrylic painting on wooden board, designed to reflect the energy and unity of the event.

For safety and compliance, I remained in a fixed position throughout the shoot, avoiding any flight directly above the crowd. The Mavic 4 Pro performed beautifully, allowing me to gather dynamic visuals while maintaining a respectful distance. These shots will now serve as the foundation for a composition that honours the players, volunteers, and supporters who made the day so memorable.

This project is a perfect example of Drone Devotion’s mission: blending technical precision with creative storytelling to elevate moments that matter. Whether it’s a wedding, a property shoot, or a grassroots charity match, we’re here to capture the heart of the occasion—safely, professionally, and with purpose.

Stay tuned for updates as the painting takes shape. And to everyone who braved the weather and cheered from the side-lines: thank you. You’ve helped create something that will live on long after the final whistle.

Vincent Ball

Founder, Drone Devotion
